Parent Coaching 101

Hi there, I’m Eliana, your friendly neighborhood bilingual speech-language pathologist here in Tulsa.

One of the most powerful tools I’ve discovered in my work isn’t just speech therapy itself—it’s you, the parent.

So many families I meet are doing amazing things already. They just need a little guidance, reassurance, and a few tools to feel more confident in supporting their child’s communication. That’s where parent coaching comes in.

What Is Parent Coaching in Speech Therapy?

Think of parent coaching as a team-up. It’s not about telling you what to do—it's about partnering with you to build on what you’re already doing every day. I sit down with you, either in person or virtually, and we explore ways to naturally support your child’s language development through your routines.

Unlike traditional therapy, parent coaching empowers you to become your child’s communication coach in real time.

Why Parents Are the Most Powerful Teachers

You spend more time with your child than anyone else. You know their quirks, their favorite snacks, their sleepy-time routines—and all of those moments are opportunities for language growth.

Research backs this up: consistent, responsive interaction with caregivers is one of the biggest predictors of language success, especially in the early years. When you model, expand, and respond to your child’s communication attempts, you’re literally shaping their brain in meaningful ways.

Everyday Routines That Support Language (No Flashcards Required!)

We don’t believe in adding stress to your day. Instead, we help you infuse communication into what you’re already doing. Here are a few favorites:

  • Mealtime magic: Label foods, talk about tastes, practice turn-taking (“More, please!”).

  • Bathtime banter: Describe the water, the toys, the bubbles—use repetition and silly sounds!

  • Book time: Don’t just read—pause, point, ask questions, and let your child "read" with you.

  • Playtime practice: Let your child lead. Join their world with rich language, without interrupting their flow.
